Heading
This should be kept very simple and limited to two lines: one for your name, and one for additional information (as detailed in the following paragraphs). This section is mostly for logistical data that should not take too much space away from more high-fidelity details in the rest of your resume.
In general, some information you definitely should include:
- Your first and last name
- Your email
- Your phone number
Some information you optionally could include:
- Link to your LinkedIn profile
- Link to your GitHub profile
- Link to your X profile
- Link to your portfolio website
Note you could also include links to other social media, but you should be wary about including too much here, especially if the other profiles do not highlight technical work, outstanding achievements, or involvement with the tech industry.
Some information you definitely should not include:
- Your address
- Your date of birth
- Other personally identifiable information not included in the “definitely should” and “optionally could” include sections
Put all of the above together and you get an example heading such as below. Remember the rule of thumb of keeping everything to two lines:
What about an “objective” or “summary of achievements” section?
TL;DR - You can skip this section on your resume.
This is a waste of space for something that most likely will be skipped during review, and provides very little reliable or useful signals. If anyone tells you you should include these sections or similar (such as “highlights of resume”, “summary”, etc.) for a software engineering resume, they’ve very outdated knowledge, or don’t know what they’re talking about.
